I have only been inside an airport twice in my life, but I noticed that airports are a very emotional place. There are so many different kinds of feelings happening in those things. But it was weird, it felt like everyone else was feeling what I did? When I went the first time to pick Alicia up from the airport and I literally ran and jumped into her arms and she lifted me into the air and we laughed and cried and couldn’t believe we were seeing each other, I looked around and saw people that were laughing and happy to see their loved ones and carrying flowers/balloons/big teddy bears and people that were crying in good ways. But the second time I went and we were dropping her off, and I felt like someone had stomped on my chest really hard, and the whole place felt a lot quieter and more muted, and when we were on the shuttle to get back to the parking lot and Alicia wasn’t with us anymore, I saw a girl walking who was just quietly crying really hard. I don’t know. Emotions. People.

I feel this a lot. Can I tell y’all a story about that airport?

After Hannah and Anthony left and I went through security, I found my gate and realized I had about 45 minutes until boarding. So I went to the bathroom and the huge knot in my throat decided to unclench itself while I was in that tiny little metal bathroom stall with my luggage. I sorta just collapsed for a few minutes against the (probably gross) wall and let everything out that I’d been keeping in so I could successfully navigate the airport. After a few moments, I start to hear singing. Really beautiful, soothing singing.After I calmed down, I stepped out of the stall with all of my things to see that the owner of the voice was an airport employee who was tidying up the bathroom. I’m sure she heard me crying, and I’m sure I looked like I’d been crying. On my way out, I complimented her voice and in the most understanding tone I think I’ve ever heard, she said said “have a good day, ma’am.” I don’t know why, but that helped me so much. <3

The Ibo and Hausa-Fulani of Nigeria are each made up of five to ten million people, a figure comparable to the number of, say, Scots, Welsh, Armenians, Serbs or Croats. Yet we do not refer to the latter groups as “tribes.” The term “tribe” is almost exclusively, and very indifferently, applied to peoples of Native American or African origin. It is a label which emerged with imperialism in its application to those who were non-European and lived in a “colonial or semi-colonial dependency…in Asia, Africa and Latin America” (14). As we are attempting to discard the prejudices of imperialism it is in our best interests to discard the use of the term “tribe” when referring to the ethnic groups of Nigeria.”

I look at my student loan statements each month and feel angry and jaded toward a culture that tells poor kids that the only way to make anything of themselves is to take out a ton of loans to MAYBE have a tiny chance at competing for a job that dozens or hundreds of other people are also competing for.

I feel like someone tricked me along the way by telling me college was the answer, and I feel stupid for not having questioned that. I did enjoy college. I don’t regret my degree. I DO have a job now. But I don’t think that means the system works. I think that means I’m lucky.
